Converting A Product Deemed 100% Waste

Over 6.4 million mattresses were disposed of in the UK in 2020 alone. The planet needs solutions, not problems.

6.4m

mattresses were disposed of in the UK in 2020, according to analysis by Oakdene Hollins for the National Bedding Federation.

The problem

A product deemed waste is rarely 100% waste

Creating a circular economy is just part of a long-term solution. It reduces the need to take materials from the earth to make products in the first place.

A mattress deemed waste by the end user does not mean that 100% of its components have reached the end of their life. In most cases just one or two components have, and the rest are still in like-new condition.

Why mattresses are replaced

Six reasons a good mattress ends up as waste

Mattress dips / sags

Damaged in transit

House move / re-decorate

Retailer 100-day mattress trials

Spillage / accidental damage

Comfort / age replacement

4.8 million sent to landfill in 2020

That is the equivalent of…

Mattresses are a huge problem for landfill sites: the springy nature of a mattress causes soft spots in the ground, and spring wires become entangled in machinery.
